A sports desk with nobody at the desk

Sportaurus collects the sporting day by machine. Eight collectors run on a timer, read open sports data, and write it into our own database; the pages you see are drawn from that database and from nothing else. No editor picks the running order, and no figure on this site was typed in by a person.

What this desk is for

Most score sites show you the same wire feed in a different colour. Two things here are our own work. The first is the Formula 1 lap map: we take the raw GPS trail of a flying lap — some three hundred points at 3.7 samples a second — project it, band it by speed and lay the braking zones over the top, so a lap reads as a shape rather than a table of times. The second is depth: the German top flight is here match by match back to 2007, and every season table on those pages is added up from our own results rather than copied from anyone.

How the collecting works

Eight jobs run on their own timers. Live scores and fixtures come round fastest, standings and archives slowest. Every run is logged — what it asked for, what it got, whether it failed — and the log is public on the sources and licences page, together with every feed we read and the licence it carries. If a collector has been failing for a day, you can see that yourself rather than wonder why a table looks stale.

Where it is wrong

A machine desk is wrong in predictable ways, and it is more useful to say so than to pretend otherwise. Scores follow the feed and can trail a live match by a minute. Tennis is not being filled at all at the moment. Competitions that have finished their season can show last year's final until the new calendar appears upstream. Season tables computed from our archive will differ from the official record wherever a match was decided off the pitch. Headlines in the newsroom are the publishers' own — we show their summary and link back, and never reproduce the article.

Who runs it

Sportaurus is a project of MAIR and was built by Sponge. It carries no advertising, no affiliate links and no paywall, and it is not going to: several of the data sources it stands on are licensed for non-commercial use only, and that boundary is kept on purpose. The licence of every source is printed on the register.
